Guidance for single parents for uplifting single parents' motivation and confidence.

Being a single parent can either be caused by the death of the spouse or divorce. Raising children on your own presents a lot of challenges; these involve financial, emotional, psychological and even social obstacles especially in countries like Malaysia and other Asian countries.

Because unlike in more developed countries like the United States, Australia and other European nations, the culture of Asian countries is still not as open to single parenthood despite the more liberated lifestyle adopted from the West.

Being a single parent sometimes can be very stressful and un-organized, facing financial problems, getting a child care, finding a companion and so on.. Getting help for a single parent is very necessary to reduce the stress and be more organized.

Single parenthood may be difficult, yet one can still make the best of what he or she has.

Here are some tips on how to make it work as a single parent:

  • Believe in yourself. A lot of single parents lost much of their self-esteem after separation. Always keep in mind that you are better than the situation and that you can only discover your potential in times like these. Take the case of Grace who only tapped her potential as an entrepreneur when her husband passed away five years ago. Left with the small business and their two children, she braved her fears and believed that she can handle the retail business her husband left her and take care of her children at the same time. She ended up expanding the business and she even managed to get her two children involved by helping out in the stores.
  • Draw strength from within. No amount of help from your friends and relatives can make you gain the necessary strength to face the challenges of being a single parent. Even if you manage to draw strength from them, it will not be enough as true and lasting strength can only be attained if you will draw it from within which will allow you the independence and self-reliance you need.
  • Keep the faith. Regardless of your religion, holding on to your faith can help you through anything.
  • Develop your skills. It is never too late to develop skills that will help you earn more eventually. It may take time but it will be worth it as you will someday reap your rewards by gaining total independence. Left by her husband and forced to go through a bitter divorce, Janice felt so alone after her family shunned her for being divorced. Acknowledging the need to earn a living but she needed to take care of her two year old daughter, she turned to her baking skills and started selling cookies and homemade pastries to friends and relatives. After ten years, she already has her own bakeshop as she enrolled for short courses in baking and did research to hone her skills when business started to pick up.
  • Communicate and nurture your relationship with your children. A lot of parents underestimate their children; believing that they are too young to understand. By maintaining an open communication with your kids, you are actually helping them become responsible adults someday. Just be careful not to rob them of their childhood by assigning too many responsibilities to them and expecting them to become adults right away in their desire to help you.
  • Finances may be a challenge but assistance is available for single parents from the government or other non-profit organizations where you can turn to. There are scholarship grants for you or your children or loans for housing and the like. Keep your eyes open for these and secure the assistance you need.
  • Support groups for single parents likewise help as you will be able to find people who understand as they have been going through similar issues. You can seek their advice and assistance for whatever emotional and psychological relief you need by joining these organizations. Eventually, you will find yourself extending help to others someday, which is wonderful way to gain personal satisfaction and help you keep on track with your life.
  • Set your goals and stick with it. Simply setting your goal is not enough as perseverance and determination are important for you to stick with it and not let the obstacles get to you. Expect that things will be hard but always remember that nothing worth having ever comes easy. You want your independence and a good future for your children and you can achieve it as long as you remain focused and determined.
